The good news: Nette and I embark on our London adventure in less than 2 months!
The bad news: We are both freaking out about having nothing to wear.
I know, first world problems. But hear me out.
We all know I’m not a fashion blogger. Hi, I can’t be trusted to dress myself. Especially since my larger-than-life CrossFit booty has caused a upheaval in my pants-that-fit options. My wardrobe right now is seriously lacking in acceptable options and far too heavy on “oh honey, please do not leave the house in that”.
Then recently, my friend NotMary let me (Miss Fashion Clueless) in on a big scoop after her visit across the pond. London is a seriously hip fashion city. I’m talking swank. Style. Put-together. Done up. On point.
Oh, man. And it hit me that the last thing Nette and I want to do is go over there and look like silly Americans desperately trying to fit in. Sadly, my current wardrobe of fat pants, Lulus and tshirts certainly won’t cut it.
So, like any good crazy woman, I started a Pinterest board to start brainstorming. A place to put dreamed-up outfits for our high tea at the Ritz. Gorgeous frocks for our posh dinner at the Dorchester. Accessories. Sightseeing outfits. Coats, because let’s also not forget it will be November in London, so we’re expecting temps in the mid-50s as a high and quite chilly at night.
Next, I started shopping and picked up a few key pieces with the help of my trusted style advisor Bertie.
You simply cannot go wrong with a classic white oxford. On it’s own with jeans, boots and pops of colored accessories, or as a layer piece under sweaters – the options are endless. I consider this staple purchase well worth the investment.
I’ve been stalking the perfect chambray for months and decided to pull the trigger with this one… but it was full price and the budget was already whining. Bertie advised me to wait a bit until it went on sale. Would you believe the day after our mall visit J.Crew made this blouse 25% off with free shipping?? DONE. It should arrive any day now! (NOTE: Their 25% off Fall sale is still going on, so hop to it!)
Bertie picked this piece out for me. Let me just tell you that I never argue with Bertie. Her style and taste is beyond flawless. I put this frock on and stared at myself, speechless. Because holy crap, it’s one of those dresses that make you think “I can’t possibly be that hottie in the mirror”. Not to mention, it was marked down from $130.00 to $32-something. Picture this in the fall, with a black cardigan (or leather jacket, rawr!) and tights and tall black boots. Or the white Oxford, a scarf and my brown Fryes. Totally layer-able OR appropriate with sexy heels and tons of bling for a night on the town in London.
When I found this sweater for a mere twenty dollars, it was a no-brainer. Put that white Oxford underneath and pair with skinny denim and cute flats. Boom. Sightseeing attire, for sure!
Next up, I realized I can utilize some pieces I already have:
This gorgeous number may be perfect for dinner at The Dorchester! Many thanks to Bertie, again. 😉
This Lands’ End faux wrap dress is super comfortable and would be adorable paired with a denim jacket and boots.
Like maybe my beloved Fryes.
And this denim jacket I had completely forgotten about!
Or these! Nette went on an online shopping binge and a few days later, these arrived at my doorstep!! I adore them. And I think I win for having the best friends.
So after these key purchases, some generous gifts and a little rummaging in my closet, it turns out I may not need to break the bank for my London/Fall wardrobe after all. I’d still feel better having more pants options – brown/beige skinny jeans, especially – and while I love my Fryes, I’m not sure my feet will tolerate full days of walking all over London in them. So I’ll be stalking sales on pants + flat, tall, brown riding boots + flat, tall black moto boots. For those, I’m going to hit DSW, Express, Gap and sales at J.Crew, Banana, Ann Taylor, etc. And oof, I still need something fancy to wear to high tea.
Feel free to chime in with suggestions, veto my ideas and/or follow along my style mishaps on Pinterest.
