One Friday night not too long ago, I was catching up with a few girlfriends over dinner and wine. My phone had been stashed in my purse, but when I walked by it to refill my wine glass I heard multiple text dings from within. Pulling out my phone, I saw a missed call from Nette and multiple texts. The first text I opened, this is what I saw:
What did you notice first? The furbaby or THE RING??? I saw that rock first!!!
I very rudely halted the conversation in the room, meaning I may have yelled HOLY SHIT! and ran to the other room to immediately call Nette.
Nette lives in California and I’m here in Atlanta, but we may as well have been jumping up and down in the same room. We screamed, cried, laughed and then I beamed from ear to ear as she told me how he proposed.
The background is that they’d been contemplating getting a boxer puppy, but hadn’t chosen a time to actually look and adopt. Well… meet Cooper.
On this particular Friday, Nette’s honey Mike was out “running errands” and sent her a text when he was on the way home saying he needed help carrying in groceries. When she heard the garage door open, she came out to unload and there was that lil’ face peering through the car window! Nette of course flipped in happiness and immediately took him out to snuggle… not noticing that Mike had slipped inside the kitchen door.
A few minutes into squirming puppy kisses in the driveway, Nette realized her gifter had disappeared! So she gathered the puppy up and walked through the garage and into the kitchen door.
And there was Mike, on one knee.
Can I get a collective sigh and an awwwwwwww, everyone?
So there you have it. My best friend Nette is getting married!!!
I’ve known this amazing woman since we were in 6th and 7th grade. We were band dorks together, ruled our horrible high school soccer team and generally just got into ton of trouble. (Just wait for the London story… it’s coming!!) We didn’t attend the same college and lost touch after that. I was in grad school while she was serving our country in the Army (yep – she’s a badass, too). We reconnected, thanks to Facebook, and by that time I was in Jersey and she’d moved to Cali. But as with the best of friendships, despite the years apart it was as if not a day had gone by. We were still those crazy teenagers who were irreverently goofy the minute we were in the same room. We fly cross country to see each other every few months and email/text/talk/FaceTime a ton. We’ve weathered each other’s many dating disasters and broken hearts. She will fiercely protect me and defend me, no matter what and no questions asked – the same as I’d do for her. Just ask Mike, who endured an FBI-grade interrogation from me when we met! Um, my honey better be prepared for the same from her when they meet…. after Nette gives him a linebacker bear hug.
Y’all, my heart is bursting. Nette is marrying an amazing guy who matches her dork-meter equally (if not more), challenges her, respects her and most importantly, loves her beyond measure. If that weren’t enough to be all tearfully happy over, she’s honored me by asking if I’ll stand next to her as her maid of honor. I couldn’t be more tickled and of course I said yes immediately!!!
The very next day after the proposal, I sucked Nette into the black hole of Pinterest and all that it offers in the way of wedding ideas. We started a few pinboards for ideas to help us start the planning process and it’s snowballing quickly. But the best board by far is titled “OMGNO” and subtitled “Because it’s equally critical to know what you DON’T want”. Here are a few gems we’ve found.
Can you tell we’re having fun??? But I can’t end this post on that note. Instead I’ll let you drool over her stunning bling. Because, WOW.
So there you have it. The girlfriend I’ve known for going on eighteen years is getting married!! Nette, I love ya and I am so, so, so happy for you and Mike. Keep sending me daily pics of my furry nephew and let’s plan a visit SOON!
I cannot wait to keep y’all in the loop as things progress!
